About Our Team: Carvel

Our team focuses on building and maintaining a suite of tools known as Carvel (https://carvel.dev/) . Carvel consists of reliable, single-purpose, composable tools. These tools aid in application building, configuration, and deployment to Kubernetes.

About the Role

The Staff Engineer role provides a unique opportunity to impact the Kubernetes tooling landscape. You will be able to solve technical challenges that show your deep understanding of Kubernetes. Working in a collaborative environment, you will have the opportunity to level up your teammates’ domain knowledge and software engineering practices. Through agile software development methodologies and test-driven development (TDD), you will ensure high-quality code. This is a hands-on technical role focused on execution and delivery, though, there will be plenty of opportunities for technical design and architecture.

Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

  • Within the first 30 days, hit the ground running. Get to know your team. Develop a high-level understanding of Carvel’s technical domain, scope, and responsibilities. Begin operating as a part of your team.

  • Within the first 90 days, continue to deepen your relationships with the team, the tools, and the domain. Develop a lower-level understanding of at least one of the Carvel tools. Contribute to technical and product discussions within the team. Begin operating as a team.

  • Within the first 6 months, know the team and the tools. Understand your teammates and how to best support their growth. Understand our users and their needs. Contribute too technical and/or product discussions across multiple teams. Become an approver/owner of at least one of the Carvel tools. Begin operating as a team leader.

  • Within the first 12 months, establish yourself as a team leader. Identify the technical gaps of the team and level up your teammates. Deeply understand our users and their needs. Lead technical and/or product discussions across multiple teams. Become an owner/approver of at least two of the Carvel tools.

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing regularly?

  • Mentor and coach team members to grow their technical capabilities and Kubernetes domain knowledge.

  • Lead the design and delivery of key team investments. Understand the tradeoffs of various Kubernetes Custom Resource Definitions.

  • Hands-on execution work. Foster a TDD culture. Write golang in a clear, sustainable manner. Articulate pros/cons of different golang testing frameworks (such as golang’s built-in testing, testify, ginkgo, etc.).

  • Identify team inefficiencies and propose experiments.

  • Grow the Carvel open-source community by responding to questions, triaging issues, reviewing pull requests, and (optionally) presenting talks/demos.

  • Leverage domain expertise to refine the vision and roadmap of the team.

What is leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

The hiring manager for this role is Aaron Hurley, Engineering Manager. Aaron joined VMware as part of the Pivotal acquisition in December 2019. Before VMware, Aaron was a software engineer and engineering manager at Pivotal.
