Position Purpose

A Respiratory Therapist Apprentice is a RCP student currently enrolled in a Respiratory Care program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC). The position allows for a student to productively gain experience with non-critical care tasks related to direct patient care, while under the supervision of a licensed Respiratory Therapist. The Respiratory Therapist Apprentice will have successfully completed the following:

o Accepted Enrollment in an Accredited Respiratory Care Education Program

o Completed Clinical Skills Check List

The skills check list must be signed by a clinical respiratory therapist licensed by The Nevada Board of Medical Examiners pursuant to NRS 630.023.

Nature and Scope

Under the supervision of a Respiratory Therapist the incumbent performs respiratory therapy procedures as outlined by the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners NRS 630.021 “Practice of respiratory care” defined, as per physician ordered protocol or modalities ordered by physicians to improve the cardiopulmonary conditions of patients from newborn to geriatric ages. Respiratory Therapist Apprentices primarily work with patients in adult general care, and pediatric general care, and may provide respiratory care at secondary care sites consistent with the mission and obligations of Renown Regional Medical Center Department of Respiratory Care and the accredited education program enrolled within.

The scope of practice for a Respiratory Therapist Apprentices includes verified skills by the Respiratory Care Educator.

Evidence based respiratory practice, along with beginning critical thinking skills, are required to provide optimally safe patient care when interacting with internal and external contacts and exercising judgment and making decisions.

This position is challenged to integrate the respiratory care of the patient with other care providers to achieve desired results and optimal outcomes.

The incumbent has the authority to initiate CPR, to contact other Respiratory Therapists in relation to care ordered, and perform all activities as assigned under the supervision of his or her authorized respiratory instructor.

The incumbent is responsible for the proper documentation of all patient records and department logs. The incumbent is responsible for keeping abreast of changes in the Respiratory and health care field.

The incumbent is accountable for the completion of care task assigned and ordered for Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult and Geriatric patients. They must demonstrate the ability to work with patient’s physical, motor / sensory adaptation, cognitive and psychosocial needs specific to the population being served, and meets standards of quality as measured by the Unit/Department age specific competency standards.

Intense continuous mental effort is required to provide optimal safe patient care and the same mental effort is required when interacting with internal and external contacts, exercising judgments and making decisions.

Education:

Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing and speaking English. Accepted enrollment in an accredited Respiratory Care education program accredited through CoARC.

Upon successful completion of the Respiratory Care Program, NBRC Board Exam taken within 30 days preferred. Passing NBRC Board Exam within 3 months (or 3 attempts) preferred. Extension may be granted by the Manager of Respiratory Care but will not exceed more than 12 months from Program completion date.

Experience:

Completed Clinical Skills Check List within (90) days signed by a respiratory therapist whom is licensed by The Nevada Board of Medical Examiners pursuant to NRS 630.023. Must demonstrate ongoing progress toward achieving Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential on a yearly basis.

Current AHA BLS certification required.

Computer / Typing:

Must possess, or be able to obtain within 90 days, the computers skills necessary to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.
