Responsibilities

The Surgical Service Section of the Reno VA Medical Center provides surgical care in outpatient and inpatient settings throughout the facility. Assess, stabilize, and determine the disposition of patients with emergent and elective conditions consistent with medical staff policy regarding emergency and consultative call services. Functions/Scope Evaluate and treat general surgery emergencies in the emergency department, inpatient wards, ICU and operating room Provide quality outpatient care in accordance with approved clinical privileges. Maintain a high degree of excellence in clinical outcomes while providing efficient patient care throughout Maintain professional competency, courtesy and flexibility and provide the necessary services of this specialty. Attend and participate in outpatient clinics and take an active role in the evaluation of the patient, decision for treatment/care, and complete timely documentation in the patient electronic records. Collaborative patient management along with the other departments and sections of the hospitals including, but not limited to, laboratory, Medicine, Radiology, and the auxiliary services. Attend all meetings required by the Organization and the Surgery Service in particular. Maintain proficiency inf general surgery with the ability to perform the gamut of procedures within the specialty and as able with facility support. Participation in the teaching programs of the University of Nevada, School of Medicine. Provide educational opportunities for students of medicine, physician assistant, nursing and pharmacy Schools. Residents in training in medicine, surgery, psychiatry and family practice may also receive instruction from Surgical Service staff. Provide training and/or direction as applicable to supporting employees (e.g. RNs, LPNs, technicians, administrative support staff) assigned to the unit during the performance of duties. Such direction and interaction will adhere to government and professional clinical standards and accepted clinical protocol.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Physical requirements outlined below. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: Physical requirements: Applicants must meet physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to placement is required. This is a designated drug testing position. After appointment, you will be subject to random testing for illegal drug use. Requires lifting 15-44 pounds; pushing (approx. 2 hours); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers and both hands; walking and standing from 3-5 hours and kneeling. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Must have depth perception and ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors. Hearing aid is permitted.
