VMware Manager of Engineering, Tanzu Observability - Opportunity for Working Remotely in Reno, Nevada

The Elevator Pitch

What is the primary need, technical challenge, and/or problem you will be responsible for?

  • As an engineering manager in the Tanzu Observability K8s group SaaS team, you’ll lead a team of engineers to build best-in-class observability solutions for K8s within the Tanzu Observability by Wavefront product.

  • You and your team will be responsible for the performant implementation of technically challenging features that involve a high volume of metrics, logs, and data -- such as streaming, analysis, and visualization. You’ll solve technical problems with Go using Test Driven Development (TDD) and pair programming.

  • You’ll create solutions that scale to meet the needs of the world’s biggest enterprises.

  • You’ll work with the product management team to oversee your team’s backlog and ensure that the engineers are delivering excellent work at a sustainable pace.

  • You’ll also mentor engineers, project managing their careers and providing them with feedback.

Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

Our observability solutions enable our customers to sleep at night knowing their platform is healthy and performant. You’ll work with the product management team to ensure that the engineering team is prioritizing the right work and that work completion will fit with business needs. You’ll also write code and contribute to architectural decisions that help create the best possible product.

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

Your primary responsibility will be to facilitate healthy teams and the effective delivery of software. You’ll play an integral role in the creation of an inclusive, sustainable, learning-focused team culture through giving feedback, keeping track of the team’s backlog and coaching team members to do their best work.

While the majority of the team is located in Denver and Palo Alto, right now we’re all completely remote and remote teamwork is increasingly important to us. To facilitate team practices and cohesion, we expect folks to work within flexible core hours based on US Mountain and Pacific Time. We use Slack to stay connected and shared workspaces for pairing. We are working hard to make sure that our distributed teams function as smoothly as our distributed systems.
