Revenue Accounting Manager
Business Summary
The Revenue Technical Accounting Team’s mission is to properly interpret and apply revenue recognition guidance in order to mitigate business and financial risks and ensure the accounting for sales transactions are accurately recorded and reported in a timely manner. We are part of a wider Revenue Team comprising of over 100 people.
VMware is seeking a highly motivated technical revenue accounting expert to join our global revenue team. The Revenue Manager will represent the revenue accounting function in providing technical revenue accounting expertise to both internal team members and internal stakeholders. This position is critical to the revenue accounting team in ensuring the company is accounting for revenue in accordance with ASC 606, Revenue from Contracts with Customers and U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. Primary responsibilities include maintenance and update of the company’s revenue accounting policies, assessment of technical revenue accounting positions and documentation, accounting assessment of complex customer contracts and business models/new product offerings, documentation and delivery of training, and providing support and partnership to business unit finance team and global revenue accounting team.
The key responsibilities are as follows:
Review and document technical accounting positions based on the Company’s go to market strategies, business models, and offerings
Review and maintenance of revenue accounting policies and technical positions
Assistance in assessing acquired Company’s accounting positions and offerings
Technical resource to the deal assurance and management teams on complex customer contracts and new offerings
Review and assess revenue accounting impacts on external communications including, press releases, roadmap materials, and tradeshow materials
Develop training plan for global team and provide periodic trainings on key areas of focus or new offerings
Partnership with various stakeholders including business unit leads, product managers, and finance teams to provide technical revenue accounting assessments
Provide management with readouts on accounting assessment and conclusions on key initiatives/offerings
Skills and Experience Required:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting; CPA
8+ years total revenue/accounting experience, including experience in a software publicly traded company
Expertise in Accounting Standard ASC 606
Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and experience in working with stakeholders across all levels within cross-functional and multi-country-based teams
Ability to read, analyse, and interpret general revenue documents and contracts and applicable of relevant accounting guidance
Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of team members located in different countries;
Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
Ability to recognize problems, gather data, draw valid conclusions, and effectively present information to managers, peers, and customers
Strong understanding of internal controls and SOX compliance
Ability to organize and prioritize tasks effectively in order to meet tight deadlines, working independently and under a multi-faceted team model
Ability to recognize problems, gather data, draw valid conclusions, and effectively present information across a wide level of audience within the company.
Strong people management and mentoring skills
Preferred Skills and Experience:
Combination of public accounting and industry experience preferred
Strong writing and oral skills
Proficiency in Excel, Word and PowerPoint
