What does an exceptional Senior Mainframe Storage Engineer do?
The Senior Mainframe Storage Engineer is responsible for the planning, design, management, configuration, implementation, performance tuning, backup/recovery, data replication, and disaster recovery methodologies of a fast-growing, complex storage environment. This position requires knowledge of best practices for disk configurations, SMS management, catalog management, and tape technologies. This position reports to the Mainframe Storage Engineering Manager and is part of a dedicated storage team that works closely with other engineering teams to provide technical support for all storage management-related activities. This individual may also act as a liaison to other departments, representing the storage team on all technical matters related to storage management. A successful candidate will be highly skilled, detail-oriented, results driven, and enjoy working in a fast paced, exciting environment.
In this role, you can look forward to:
Manage data backup library to include storage of tapes and disks in storage facilities in a zSeries mainframe environment.
Configuring new storage arrays, peripherals, services, settings, and storage.
Collaborating with development and other infrastructure teams to provide the right level of agility within a defined delivery process.
Installing, patching, upgrading and backup monitoring software solutions used to monitor our global storage environment.
Monitoring hardware health, processes and key business processes running on our storage arrays.
Project planning and documenting actions for monitoring and alerting.
Working closely with the application development organization and other functional IT areas to determine best practices, tuning, and problem resolution and root cause analysis.
Recommending strategies for process and monitoring improvement.
Creating high quality documentation that meets the needs and expectations of the stakeholders.
Using detailed research skills in diagnosing and solving technology problems in a logical and detailed manner.
Delivering client expectations of timeliness, attention and focus on their needs.
Understanding sophisticated business rules and logic and being able to troubleshoot the gaps.
Rotating coverage of on-call duties after hours and on weekends to support our monitoring solutions.
Basic Qualifications for Consideration:
10+ years of zSeries Mainframe Storage Engineering experience in z/OS.
High School Diploma required.
Experience in MVS skills in all IBM utilities and mainframe disciplines.
Strong understanding of access methods and VSAM Record Level Sharing. (IAM a plus)
Software: TSO ISPF, JCL, DFSMS, HSM, DSS, DFP, IBM utilities, CA1, RMM
Enterprise class storage experience: DELL, HDS, or IBM Point in Time Backup knowledge, Replication/Mirroring technologies including IBM PPRC, Metro/Global Mirroring and DELL SRDF.
Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Experience with Disaster Recovery development, testing, & implementation
Scripting automation experience using REXX, Clist or similar scripting language.
Experience in reporting with SharePoint and Confluence.
Proven understanding of server structure, maintenance of server environments and hierarchy of server layout.
Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
ITIL V3 Foundations certification.
